Day 4 - Crowded Salcombe

Salcombe on the Hill

Salcombe by night

Slow going

We are a bit behind with this log.... This is being written at the end of day 6. Hoping I remember what happened.

We had a good breeze leaving Bridport and hoped to get at least as far as Salcombe... Hopefully as far as Plymouth to join the guys from Eastbourne watching some of the sail GP event.

Another slow and frustrating day with occasional bursts of speed to show us what we were missing.... But mostly pooling along in second gear.

Eventually we gave up completely and accepted that we would have to overnight in Dartmouth somewhere. The wind made this almost impossible too as we were finding ourselves being swept past the entrance on the tide.

Fortunately at this point the wind god's smiled on us and switched the direction right round to about NE and then turned the fan up to about a F3 to F4. Followed a screaming spinnaker reach down the coast to Start
Point and then an awkward beat into Salcombe. I don't know how long it took to get from the Dart entrance to Salcombe entrance but it felt like about an hour... Which showed the sort of speeds we could be doing if there was just enough of the blowy stuff.

I have today I was not impressed with Salcombe.... crowded, nowhere to moor or anchor and really expensive. However by about 23:00 we had had enough and were tired enough to get a decent night's sleep in one of the
less fashionable corners of the harbour.

  1. Salcombe summed up quite well there. Should have arrived 20 years earlier!

  2. Nice summing up of Salcombe in summer. It has lost some of its charm . I guess you arrived 20years too late!
